Footnote 5

The Nature Conservancy is a leader in securing conservation easements, which the organization defines as "a voluntary, legally binding agreement that limits certain types of uses or prevents development from taking place on a piece of property now and in the future, while protecting the property's ecological or openspace values." An agreement is signed by a landowner and an entity (unit of government, military base, or a land protection organization) that is known as a “land trust.” Money may change hands, or the easement may be donated. For more on easements, see The Nature Conservancy website at http://www.nature.org/aboutus/howwework/conservationmethods/privatelands/conservationeasements/about/art14925.html.
